Q: Where are the allotments in Verwood?
A: Despite the 1906 Act that mandates that local authorities provide allotments to the community, Verwood has none. See our Mission statement for more details.
See a copy of the Small Holdings and Allotments Act
here.
A: The standard size of an allotment is normally 10 rods or 300sq yards or 250 sq meters. There would be 16 full size plots to an acre and 40 plots to a hectare. Some local authorities in the Dorset area provide sites with a mix of full, 3/4 and 1/2 plots. Verwoood Town Council aim to provide adequate land for 140 full size plots.
A: Verwood Town Council have the legal obligation to provide allotments, however there is no binding timescale within which they must be provided. The council began developing a
strategy in 2008, with formal announcement in their
November 2008 Amenities Committee meeting. The strategy has no timescales and infers that providing allotments may not be possible (strategy point 6).
VAHA was formed by residents who were on the 'official' council waiting list, in response to VTC commenting on a "lack of demand" as demonstrated by there not being an Allotments Holders Assocaition!
VAHA is now lobbying the Town Council & District council and working independantly to secure allotments.
VTC are working very constructively with VAHA to explore possible options for an allotment site. We are currently working together to look at the Blackmoor Road site, as well as other options.
